Channel 7 Sunrise Interview on 13 April 2025

On the first anniversary of the Bondi Junction Westfield attack, Sunrise reflected on the tragedy that claimed six lives and injured many more. Gina Field, an operational security expert, joined the program to discuss how the private security industry has responded over the past year.

Gina acknowledged that nothing could have prepared the sector for the scale of the attack, revealing that prior to the incident, security was primarily focused on customer service, shoplifting, and antisocial behaviour. The Bondi tragedy exposed significant vulnerabilities in the system.

Since the attack, there have been major changes in training and preparedness. Security guards are now receiving induction programs covering mass casualty first aid, lone-wolf attack response, and group-based protocols. Protective equipment such as stab-proof vests, body cameras, and duress buttons have been rolled out nationwide, with Westfield acting quickly within a week of the attack.

Gina also noted increased collaboration between private security and emergency services, with more still to come as the inquest into the attack continues. She emphasised that while improvements have been made, ongoing reviews and enhancements to security practices and gear are crucial for continued safety.
