Gina joined Mike Jeffreys on 2GB to discuss the role of private security in addressing growing crime rates. While acknowledging the value of security personnel in supplementing law enforcement, she argued that private security is not a long-term solution to crime, calling it a “band-aid measure.”
Gina highlighted the increasing reliance on private security due to police shortages, with local councils across Australia implementing security personnel to support law enforcement. However, she pointed out that security guards lack police powers, arrest authority, and weapons, making their role largely limited to providing a visible deterrent.
She noted that past security personnel had more authority and were even armed, but over time, legislative changes have stripped them of these powers. With crime rates rising, she questioned the logic behind reducing security capabilities while expecting them to handle volatile situations.
Gina also emphasised inconsistencies in security training across Australian states, making it difficult for personnel to work nationally. She supported efforts to integrate security services with policing but stressed that without proper training, powers, and legislative support, security personnel cannot effectively address crime. She urged politicians to rethink policies and grant security officers the tools they need to be effective.
Ultimately, while she applauded initiatives aimed at public safety, Gina maintained that relying on underpowered private security is not a sustainable solution to crime.
